How does my collision coverage figure into all of this?

Your own coverage is “no fault” coverage for you. If the accident was your fault, or more than 50 percent your fault, your own collision coverage – minus your deductible, if any – will pay for the damage to your vehicle. All of the recommendations for dealing with the other person’s insurance company also apply to negotiations with your own insurance company. Also, if the accident was not your fault, but you are having difficulty with the other person’s insurance company in reaching a fair agreement, it may be easier to reach an agreement with your own company under collision coverage.
